The things families ask before and after a pet arrives

Paw questions

This is one of the house pages behind the shelves of furReal interactive pets — the part that explains how the place runs.

Do furReal pets have an off switch?

All of them. Depending on the pet it sits under the belly or behind the neck, usually under a flap of fur. Switched off, the pet is an ordinary plush animal.

How do furReal pets work?

Sensors under the fur pick up a stroke, a squeeze or an accessory held to the mouth. A small board decides which response fits, then drives a speaker and — on the bigger pets — a motor in the neck, the tail or the legs.

Are batteries included?

Most pets arrive with a demo set fitted. Those are there to prove the pet works in the box, not to last. Fit fresh alkalines before the first real play session.

What ages are the pets for?

Four and up across the family. The feed-and-pet sequences need a child who can do one thing, wait for the answer, and then do another.

Can two pets of the same line be told apart?

Each has its own name on the box. In a house with two children and the same tiger, writing the name somewhere discreet saves a weekly argument.

My pet will not walk. What should I check?

The floor, first. Deep carpet stalls the small wheels on an A-Lots pup. Then the batteries, then whether the leash is clipped in the walking position rather than the carry one.

Does feeding need the accessory from the same box?

Yes. The sensor is keyed to the shape and depth of its own moulded bottle, carrot or leaf. An accessory from a different pet often sits in the mouth without waking anything.

Can a furReal pet be washed?

Surface only — a barely damp cloth, mild soap, air dry away from heat, then brush the pile. Never submerge one and never use a machine.

How long do the batteries last?

A big interactive pet played with daily will want fresh cells in a month or two. A Handfuls bird on a coin cell goes much longer. Take the batteries out before any long storage.

Who handles a faulty pet?

The order page of the partner store you bought from. They hold the proof of purchase and the replacement stock, so a claim settles far faster through them than through us.

Every shelf of furReal interactive pets

Everything we keep is a furReal interactive pet, and every one of them does something back. The walking shelf holds the Walk-a-Lots pups — a Bernedoodle, a Schnauzer, a French Bulldog — each on its leash, each with a tail that wags while it walks. The feeding shelf holds the kitty, the cow, the tiger that roars and the silly hippo. The small shelf holds Handfuls and My Minis.

A toy that reacts

Plush on the outside, motions and sounds on the inside. Touch the head, feed the mouth, tip the body — each gesture has a reaction, and some pets have a sleep mode they enter when the room goes quiet. Kids work this out in about four minutes without reading anything.

Who buys them

Parents, mostly, and mostly around a birthday. The question behind the purchase is usually responsibility: a child asks for a dog, the answer is not yet, and a plush puppy that barks is the honest middle. Care for it, brush it, watch it fall asleep — the habits transfer.

Monkey, panda, unicorn

Beyond the dogs there is a monkey, a panda turning head over tail, a penguin, a unicorn and more. Nobody leaves the house without a friend; most people join with one animal and come back for the next, which is the fun of a line this wide.
