Small pets are not simplified pets. A Handfuls cockatoo is three and a half inches tall and still blinks, chirps and reacts to a stroke along the back. My Minis and Newborns sit in the same pocket territory — a kitty, a puppy, a koala, a tiger — small enough to come along and sturdy enough to survive the trip.

Handfuls are the smallest and the most reactive for their size: a bird or a penguin that sits on a moulded perch and answers a finger. My Minis are soft-first, built to be held in a fist and squeezed. Newborns sit between the two — plush, light, with a sound and a little motion in the head.
Together they cover the ground that a big interactive pet cannot: the pocket of a coat, the top of a school bag, the hand of a child in the back seat of a car.
There are no wheels, no leash and no accessory to lose. A small furReal pet is one piece of plush with a switch, so the whole thing either comes along or it does not.
That also makes them the first furReal pet a lot of families buy. A stocking is a Handfuls-sized space, and a child who likes one usually comes back for the rest of the set.
Around three and a half inches tall, which is palm-sized for an adult and two-handed for a four-year-old. Each one comes with its own moulded perch or base.
No. My Minis are soft-first, made to be squeezed in a fist. Newborns are slightly larger, with a sound and a little movement in the head. Both are pocket-sized.
Never. Surface wash with a damp cloth and mild soap, air dry, then brush the pile. The sound module and the batteries sit under the fur.
The boxes say four and up, and that stands — there are small moulded parts on the perches and bases. For a younger child, a plain plush without electronics is the safer choice.
A furReal pet is a plush animal with motions, sounds and reactions built into it. Some of them walk: a furReal Walk-a-Lots pup trots on its leash, wags its tail and barks as it walks around the room. Some of them feed — hold out the bowl and the kitty asks for more. Some are small enough to fall asleep in a coat pocket, which is what the Handfuls and My Minis shelves are for.
Three things, always. Is it gentle. Is it still fun after the first week. Is it a fair step toward real responsibility. Our answer is yes, yes and yes, in that order — a child who learns to brush a plush dog, put it to sleep and watch for the mode it enters is a child getting ready for an animal that breathes.
Dogs lead the house: the Bernedoodle, the Schnauzer, the French Bulldog, the Poop-a-Lots pug. Behind them come cats, a monkey, a tiger that roars, a silly hippo, a panda turning head over tail. Touch the head of any featured pet and something happens — rocking, barking, being snuggled. Nobody leaves this house without a friend, and nobody joins it without a birthday coming up.
Brush the plush, keep it dry, take the batteries out when the pet goes to sleep for the season. Kids love these animals hardest in the first month, and the care habit is what carries them past it — worth teaching while the play is still new. That is the whole toy, and the fun of it.
